As far as we know, the first Hongkonger in Estonia is a musician who arrived in 1997. Nearly three decades later, more than twenty Hongkongers now see Estonia as their home. Many more would visit as tourists, stay as an exchange student, and so forth.
There have been heartwarming stories where Hongkongers stumbled on each other in Estonia and decided to help out a newcomer. From time to time, people also gather spontaneously to celebrate festivities like the Lunar New Year or Mid-Autumn Festival.
These tiny sparks of sociality somehow persisted through a few years, but it may not be sustainable in the long run. Encouraged by a solid foundation, we decided to take the leap of faith and started organising.
Even before our registration, we had been exploring the potential of collaboration with other Hongkonger organizations in Europe facing similar constraints of manpower and resources. This eventually led to The European Hong Kong Diaspora Alliance (EHKDA), of which Hongkongi Maja is a founding member.
